    Weight & Age Information

OUR TEAMS

FOOTBALL:

The Lower Perk Longhorns, as members of the the Bert Bell Organization, feature teams that are designated by age for Cheerleading and both age and maximum weight for Football.

In Football, we even feature a unique Older/Lighter rule that allows children who weigh less than 20lbs under their age group's weight limit to play on a younger team.

This practical format is designed to promote both safety and sportsmanship by matching children by age, experience and maturity, as well as size.

Our teams are as follows:

Flag Division

  • Ages 5 & 6 (no weight restriction)

Flag Football offers a terrific chance for the little ones to have a great time while learning the rules of the game!

80lb. - Peewee Division

  • Ages 7 & 8 weighing no more than 80lbs.
  • Age 9 weighing 60-lbs. or less
  • Most players weigh around 55lbs.

This team is a great introduction to tackle football and focuses on teaching the boys (and yes, occassionally some girls!) proper skills and technique.

100lb. - Midget Division

  • Ages 9 & 10 weighing no more than 100-lbs.
  • Age 11 weighing 80-lbs. or less
  • Most players weigh around 85lbs.

Here, we begin to build on the kids' knowledge and experience as well as continue to stress the fundamentals.

120lb. - Junior Division

  • Ages 11 & 12 weighing no more than 120-lbs.
  • Age 13 weighing 105-lbs. or less
  • Most players weigh around 105lbs.

At this level, the intensity begins to heat up a bit with the kids being introduced to some more advanced techniques and strategies.

150lb. - Senior Division

  • Ages 13 & 14 weighing no more than 145-lbs.
  • Age 15 weighing 125-lbs. or less
  • Most players weigh around 125lbs.

Our 145lb team offers a terrific opportunity to kids to prepare for football and the High School level.

CHEERLEADING:

Our cheerleading teams are organized along the same lines as football, by age, and cheer both during games and in competitions.

    Overview of our Rules

INFORMATION ABOUT OUR LEAGUE AND TEAM:

  • Team assignment by age is based upon the child's age as of July 1.
  • Per Bert Bell League rules, each team has to have at least 15 players to be certified to play a game.
  • The Longhorn policy is to split teams into Varsity and Junior Varsity (or Silver and Black) teams when we have 36 or more participants at any team level, to help to ensure maximum playing time for the kids.
  • To ensure fairness, all participants must present an original Birth Certificate to League representations and have their photo taken for an official league ID card.
    • All players must present their certified ID card to participate in games (coaches hold the cards for the kids during the week)
  • Games are played on the weekends during the months of September and October.  Game days depend upon the organization and team, and are played on Saturday and Sunday mornings or afternoon, or for teams with field lighting (like the Longhorns), occassionally on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
  • Teams generally play an 8-game schedule over two months, with 4 Home games and 4 Away games
  • Based upon scheduling requirements, some teams may play over 9 weeks, with a "bye" week during the season.
  • Locations and scheduling of the games are to be determined by the April board meeting before the season begins.
  • Often, final schedules, particularly for JV games, are not finalized until shortly before the season due to kids signing up late and some teams being able to add one or more JV teams later during August.  So please, bear with us!
  • Practices can officially begin August 1st and to get the kids in ready for the season, most Longhorn coaches practice four days a week during August, from 6 to 8pm.
  • After Labor Day, each team is allowed to practice no more than 3 days a week.   Coaches generally schedule the practice nights based upon participant availability.
  • The Bert Bell League is governed by the National Federation of State High School Association’s official rules.
  • Each game is 10 minutes per quarter.
    • 7 & 8 Year Old Teams, as well as all junior varsity teams, have 10 minute running quarters.  All other teams play under traditional rules regarding clock stoppages (incomplete pass, out of bounds, etc.).
  • League playoffs are available for qualifying teams.
  • 11 & 12 Year Old and 13 & 14 Year Old teams are both eligible to name players to the Bert Bell All Star teams.
